Apple sues Jon Prosser over iOS 26 leaks

Longtime leaker and YouTuber Jon Prosser is being sued by Apple over accusations that he and others accessed confidential information about iOS 26 and its Liquid Glass redesign.

Back in April 2025, as one of a series of leaks, Jon Prosser claimed to show off the redesign of what was then expected to be called iOS 19. His videos demonstrated an artist's render rather than actual screenshots, and this was said to be in order to protect his source. Now Prosser and colleague Michael Ramacciott are being sued by Apple for misappropriation of trade secrets.

Apple's suit alleges that Prosser and Ramacciott accessed a "significant amount of additional Apple trade secret information that has not yet been publicly disclosed."

The company says that it cannot determine just what or how much information was misappropriated, so it is asking for an injunction to prevent further leaks. Apple also wants a trial by jury, with damages to be determined at such a trial.

How Prosser and Ramacciott allegedly obtained the information concerns the latter's friendship with Ethan Lipnik, who at the time worked for Apple. It's claimed that Ramacciott used Lipnik's development iPhone, seemingly without Lipnik's knowledge, and showed off iOS 26 to Prosser through a FaceTime call.

Lipnik has subsequently been fired for failing to secure the development device as required by contract and policy. Lipnik reportedly gave Apple a copy of an audio message he received from Ramacciotti, which apparently included the latter telling him what had happened.

As first spotted by MacRumors, Apple asserts that Ramacciotti knew "this access and copying was unauthorized and could put Mr Lipnik's career in jeopardy, but he did it anyway."

Apple also claims that the scheme was proposed by Prosser, who allegedly promised to find a way for Ramacciotti to get payment. Prosser is said to have shared his screen recordings with at least one other person who recognised Lipnik's apartment and told Lipnik.

Apple was then informed of the incident, not by Lipnik, but by an anonymous source, who on April 4, 2025, emailed the details "as a courtesy to the iOS 19 team."

So far Apple, Lipnik, and Ramacciotti have not commented publicly on the case. However, Jon Prosser has, by way of replying to tweets from MacRumors.

Interesting. This is not how things went down on my end. Looking forward to being able to speak to Apple about it.

-- jon prosser (@jon_prosser)

Prosser's tweet thread continues with him adding, "for the record: I certainly did not 'plot' to access anyone's phone and was unaware of the situation playing out."

In a separate posting on X, Prosser repeated the same text but added: "I did not have any passwords."

The new suit follows one Apple settled in February 2025 against former engineer Andy Aude. The terms of the settlement over Aude's alleged theft of company secrets are not known, but the engineer described his leaks as a "profound and expensive mistake."

Hopefully Prosser et al will feel the full weight of the law. Mark Gurman must be another leaker in Apple’s sights.

I am glad Apple is suing Prosser. Shut him up.

What will sites like Macrumors do if loser leakers like Prosser are finally muzzled. They may go dark.

Right move. What Prosser did, was not a rumor. It was stealing secrets.

I'll wait to hear the full story from all sides but my first thought was 'Think Secret'.

AppleInsider got sued a few years before ThinkSecret, and won too.

In this climate, though, it'll be interesting to see how this goes.

According to Prosser's text string, Apple's claims are inaccurate https://x.com/jon_prosser/status/1946058379085943243

Yeah, it’s way too early to pass judgment. Let’s see the hard evidence plays out in a neutral setting, if that’s even possible these days.

Pretty sure Gurman is a strategic leak partner of Apple’s.

One would think that the existence of a “strategic partner” for effecting leaks would negate legal liability  for those leakers who come by their information “randomly” or is dropped in their laps…In any case, it’s always going to come out in one way or another, and thank goodness for that…

The difference between Prosser and Gurman is Gurman didn't show actual stuff.  Prosser thinks he protected himself by taking what he saw and recreating it, but it's still showing proprietary material.

There are tweets saying Posser doesn’t pay his employees. He’s not looking good right now.

    I am fully behind Prosser.

Even after the horrible things the commentoprs here are making.

    Why?

Because the whole reason people read the Internet web press (including this site) come for and crave the rumor mill disguised as journalism.

at least is site is evaluative in its content.

Dude either doesn’t have a lawyer or has a really crappy one. Any mildly competent lawyer wouldn’t allow their client to run their mouth like that.

And ThinkSecret did not win their lawsuit and got shut down for the leaks they posted on their website.  I miss the days when people were actually surprised during a keynote when a new product was released, because none of it was leaked beforehand.

They got paid by Apple as part of the agreement to close down.

Apple should sue Prosser and complicit websites that constantly host his loser leaker BS and post articles on their websites after his leaker BS is leaked. Websites like Macrumors constantly host Prosser and the other loser leaker who hides behind Bloomberg. Apple, sue them and do the world a positive service.

I think a lot of us are sick of the slick, over-produced, video editor wet dreams that Apple uses to announce its products now.
Get back to live keynotes. Make the videos if you wish, but the live events were so much better.
